Management Development Programme (MDP)

Management Development Programme (MDP)
Target audienceThis programme is ideal for persons already involved in management or aspiring to enter the middle or senior management arena and who need to acquire the necessary leadership and functional experience to effectively implement best practice and strategy.
Programme Outcomes
  • Initiate, develop, implement and evaluate strategies, projects and action plans that show effective planning, organising and leading of teams.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance to all related legislative requirements that affect a business unit.
  • Through the effective use of information and systems implement innovative and strategically determined interventions and solutions that will improve the effectiveness of a business unit.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with all stakeholders including clients, team members, colleagues and senior management in order to meet business objectives.
  • Display leadership practices associated with high levels of self-awareness, management and personal development.
  • Apply economic, financial and business ethics principles in all efforts to achieve business objectives and change initiatives.
  • Implement managerial practices that demonstrate an awareness of the African context.
Admission Requirements
Students should have a NQF Level 5 or equivalent qualification and at least three years management experience. Applicants will be required to go through a selection process. RPL can be considered during the application process.
DurationTwo years, studied part-time. The Business School offers a flexible registration system.  All programmes are modularised, enabling students to link on at any stage.

Target audiencePersons who wish to embark on a management career and who need to acquire the necessary leadership and functional competence to facilitate this transition.
Programme Outcomes
  • Initiate, develop, implement and evaluate strategies, projects and action plans that show effective planning, organising and leading of teams.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance to related legislative requirements that affect the business unit.
  • Through the effective use of information and systems implement innovative and strategically determined interventions and solutions that will improve the effectiveness of a business unit.
  • Apply financial principles to achieve business objectives.
  • Apply functional competencies in a choice of relevant business fields (which includes Labour Relations, Human Resources, Integrated Operations Management, Marketing and Customer Relations Management) in order to achieve business objectives.
Admission Requirements
Students should have a NQF Level 5 or equivalent qualification plus two years' work experience.  Applicants will be required to go through a selection process.  RPL can be considered during the application process.

Emerging Leaders Programme (ELP)

Emerging Leaders Programme (ELP)
Target audienceThe target group are delegates with functional and/or organisational experience that are new comers to managerial positions within all Business sectors. Successful achievement of the programme outcomes requires delegates to have team members reporting to them. The actual work context represents an important learning platform for the delegates to reflect on current practice, test new leadership practices and document the results from learning experiments. Delegates will not be able to complete the required assessment instruments without such a team.
Programme Outcomes
  • Demonstrate development and growth of personal confidence and managerial character through increased self-knowledge.
  • Demonstrate the ability to build sufficient credibility to generate a committed team.
  • Develop interpersonal judgement and influence to manage individual performance effectively.
  • Demonstrate the ability to find responses to complex and often competing demands within the landscape of people, resources and results within a particular organisational context.
  • Demonstrate the ability to build resilience in response to demands, conflicts and isolation within the managerial context.
  • Demonstrate the ability to generate hope and efficacy in teams to navigate through changing times within an organisational context.
  • Demonstrate ownership of the Performance Management process at team level in an organisational context.

Intermediate Leadership Programme (ILP)
Target audienceTechnically competent, experienced supervisors who need to enhance their leadership, interactive and functional competencies to facilitate the transition to middle management.
Programme Outcomes
  • Develop and implement strategies that are associated with effective management of people in order to establish a well-functioning team.
  • Apply technical competence associated with operations management, quality management and productivity that result in tangible improved work outputs for a team.
  • Demonstrate improved communication skills based on improved self-awareness and awareness of others including team interactions, presentations and written business communication.
  • Deliver projects that meet the expected team objectives through the application of effective planning, implementation management, team work and problem solving.
  • Assess and align all work practices in the team to comply with ethical and relevant legal requirements including labour practices, health and safety and financial management.

Applicants should have a qualification on an NQF level 4 with an acceptable level of literacy in English and at least two years’ experience in a supervisory role. Applicants will be required to go through a selection process. RPL can be considered during the application process.

Foundation Leadership Programme (FLP)
Target audienceNew team leaders/first line supervisors or persons with the potential to move into a first line supervisory role, who need to acquire both functional and interpersonal skills in order to lead a group/team and unlock maximum performance.
Programme Outcomes
  • Implement improvements in own work practices that contribute to the achievement of team objectives by applying basic principles of quality, time management, safety management and continuous improvement practices.
  • Contribute to improved team performance through motivating self and others, dealing with conflicts effectively, harnessing diversity in own team and leading problem solving initiatives.
