NMMU Business School gives back to Community

Pancake Rally Handover

Port Elizabeth – NMMU Business School recently organized a pancake rally raising in excess of R5000. At a hand-over ceremony today, proceeds were presented to representatives from the Cuyler Holmes Service Centre for the Aged, an organization which cares for 56 elderly residents who are in vulnerable positions.

“Residents live from hand to mouth on government pensions, social grants and donor funding. Often the disposable income of the residents’ amount to R200 a month,” says social work Lisa Diesel.

“We are dependent on outreaches from our immediate stakeholder communities such as NMMU Business School to enhance the quality of life of those entrusted in our care. It is a blessing and seldom the case that organizations like the Business School find time to find out what the social and economic problems are in their neighbourhoods and specifically the issues faced by vulnerable individuals and community groups.” NMMU Business School’s main administrative head office at the Bird Street campus and the Cuyler Holmes Service Centre is situated in the historic city business district of Central in Port Elizabeth.

Leon Mouton, Director of the Leadership Academy at NMMU Business School said “we should be more involved in initiatives of this nature” and expressed his sincere appreciation to his staff for their commitment to the project from planning to execution.

Prof Steve Burgess, NMMU Business School Director said “staff members are immersed in living the NMMU organisational value of Ubuntu, acknowledging their responsibility from one to another.” The pancake rally represents the fourth community engagement intervention planned and executed by the School’s Leadership Academy in this year.

Earlier today NMMU announced that the university will maintain its presence in Central and that the Bird Street campus will become the hub for the university’s arts and culture activities as part of a bigger Mandela Bay Development Agency initiative once the Business School relocates to its new home in 2nd Avenue Campus, Summerstrand later this year.
